The department of radiation oncology of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital is one of the largest departments of radiation oncology in China. After constant hard-working for more than half a century, the department has developed into a comprehensive department integrating research, education, and clinical treatment. It is now one of the most famous bases of radiation oncology all over the country. It is one of the national training bases for radiation oncologist, a training base for Swedish Elekta Company, and the education and training center for master candidates from Tianjin Medical University.
The department have international first-class radiation therapy equipments: 4 medical linear accelerators, 1 full-digital simulator, 1 spiral CT simulator, 5 sets of inverse 3-dimensional planning system, 1 after-loading equipment, and 3 microwave machines for thermal therapy. The Department provides a full range of radiation treatment options including conformal precision radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, brachytherapy, stereotactic therapies, and hyperthermia.
In 2000, the most advanced three-dimensional stereotactic radiotherapy system was installed for clinical use (so-called X's knife). In 2006, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) technique was introduced to Tianjin for the first time, and the Cyber-knife stereotactic radio-surgery system was introduced to mainland of China in the first place, making our hospital’s radiotherapy into “robot era”. All these equipments help us go ahead in the national radiotherapy field. The precise simulation, precise planning, and precise treatment time has been approached in our department.
Faculty and staff
The department of radiation oncology is the largest department in our hospital, which including four wards, radiation physics and maintenance sub-groups. Now there are more than 250 beds in our department, More than 23,000 out-patients come to our department and more than 2400 cases are admitted and treated in our department in 2010. All the radiation oncologists pay special attention to the improvement of radiation technique and the multiple modality therapy. The radiation physics and maintenance groups are in charge of the daily quality assurance and quality control. The well cooperation among each groups assure the improvement of clinical treatment and the development of advanced techniques.
Our department has strong technique force. The department has a high level professional technical team, which consists of radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, engineers, and nurses. The academic leader of our department is Pr. Ping Wang. The director is Dr. Zhiyong Yuan. Vice directors: chief physician Li Zhu, Associate chief physician Lujun Zhao and Peiguo Wang. At present, there are 106 faculties and stuffs in our department. Among them, 7 are professors or chief physicians; 11 are associate chief physicians or associate professors, 23 have doctor or master degree. There is 1 tutor for doctor candidates and 3 tutors for master candidates. Eight senior physicians have been studied in USA, Sweden, France. As key faculties, they all play important role in our clinical work.
Recent years, our department has won many scientific and technological awards, including 3 national invention awards, 3 national practical new-type patent, 5 municipal awards for scientific and technological progress and 2 university awards. Various scientific research funds supported projects are finished or undergoing in our department, including 2 international cooperation projects and 6 national cooperation projects ongoing, 2 national natural scientific foundation projects, 2 ministry level foundation projects, 3 municipal level foundation projects, and 5 bureau or university level projects. More than hundreds peer-reviewed papers were published world wide. Within the past 3 years, there’re 10 papers were accepted in SCI journals. The total influence factors were more than 28, and the most high IF for a single paper was 6.62. The breast conservative surgery followed by radiation therapy, which was established in our hospital in 1990, benefits more than 300 patients. This treatment modality reached the advanced international standard. In 2006, Pr. Wang P and Dr. Yuan Z took the lead in using Cyberknife, the advanced stereotactic radiosurgery system, for the treatment of malignancy, which open a new field in the radiotherapy in the mainland of China.
Our department possesses the international standard radiotherapy equipments. In clinical practice, we divide into three treatment groups: head and neck (including lymphoma), thoracic, and abdominal and pelvic (including breast) groups. We can perform varied kind of modern radiotherapy techniques, including 3-dimentional conformal radiation, intensity modulated radiation therapy, brachytherapy, thermal therapy, and the most advanced Cyberknife radiosurgery.
Recently, our department further standardized the treatment modality in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, lung cancer, esophageal carcinoma, rectal carcinoma, malignant lymphoma, breast conservative surgery followed by radiotherapy, and achieved satisfactory treatment outcomes. These clinical practices indicate that the radiotherapy technique in our department reaches the top-rank in our country.
